What is it you're doing again?
Documenting the highs, lows and middle-bits of founding a start-up
And so it begins…
Welcome to my newsletter, where you can hear about my escapades founding a company and website. The website aims to support accountants and accountancy trainees in what is a challenging qualification and profession. If you’re still reading after the word accountant, well done! I can assure you though that there won’t be any debits or credits here, only real-time anecdotes of my adventures starting a company and trying to make it helpful and successful.
Why this, why now?
I am an accountant. I studied under an apprenticeship at a large company along with lots of other hopeful, bright-eyed graduates looking to kick-start their serious career in business. Studying accountancy is a brilliant foundation for any wannabe business person as it gives you a solid foundation in the workings of company accounts, strategic and financial management, company law, tax and organisation structures. Many CEOs are chartered accountants and you can see why.
Studying chartered accountancy (known as the ACA) was one hell of a journey for me. After a few exam re-sits at the very start of the qualification combined with the pressure of a new role and the fear of being fired, I was ready to give up. However, a little break away from exams gave me the motivation to continue again and qualify - scoring the highest mark in my company’s advisory department in my last exam. It was a STRUGGLE though. Being dyslexic didn’t help and being a diligent member of staff wasn’t very helpful either, however I got there.
Not everyone did though. In fact, many left our firm in the first 6 months and those that did stay and on the surface ‘thrived’ in the exams, still suffered immensely with the demands of this qualification. Hence one December in 2020, Accountancy Hub was born.
It is not until this very month, after a number of years working as a risk advisor and then business consultant specialising in inclusion, diversity and organisational culture, I decided to give my idea a real go. Whether it fails or succeeds I know I’ll learn more than I ever have about business, so I’m sure the experience won’t be without value. I’ve also been told before that I’m a bit (*cough* lot) of an idealist - so what better way to channel my energy that trying to improve the experience of other accountancy folk.
We shouldn’t be waiting for governments and politicians to change the world; it’s business leaders that can and should drive change
What’s in it for you?
By subscribing to this newsletter you can expect regular updates from me: what I’m doing, the conversations I’m having, where I’m working, whether the website is progressing, am I waking up before 10am when I have no boss to answer to? I will aim to post every Sunday evening and there is no fee, your interest is more than enough….unless hundreds of you sign up in which case I may charge you (a woman gotta pay the bills).
Thanks for reading and see you next week!
